Polonnaruwa is the capital of Sri Lanka's North Central Province and the main town of Polonnaruwa District. One portion of Polonnaruwa is still the royal ancient city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, while the other part of Polonnaruwa is known as New Town. Polonnaruwa, the second oldest kingdom in Sri Lanka, was initially founded by the Sinhalese kingdom as a military outpost.[1] After the Chola dynasty successfully invaded Anuradhapura, the country's capital at the time, in the tenth century, they renamed it Jananathamangalam. A World Heritage Site designation has been given to the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa.
